Winter Bliss

With winter upon our doorstep, and scheduled to make its very chilly entrance next week, I thought I would feature a few lovely quotes from some well-known writers. But strangely enough, I couldn’t find very many. Perhaps, winter is not most people’s favourite season? Well, for all those who are not yet convinced of winter’s charms, let’s see if you don’t waver in your opinion even slightly after reading what these clever people had to say.
"There is a privacy about it which no other season gives you...  In spring, summer and fall people sort of have an open season on each other; only in the winter, in the country, can you have longer, quiet stretches when you can savor belonging to yourself." ~Ruth Stout

"The cold was our pride, the snow was our beauty.   It fell and fell, lacing day and night together in a milky haze, making everything quieter as it fell, so that winter seemed to partake of religion in a way no other season did, hushed, solemn." ~Patricia Hampl
"Winter, a lingering season, is a time to gather golden moments, embark upon a sentimental journey,
and enjoy every idle hour."

~John Boswell
Someone painted pictures on my

Windowpane last night --
Willow trees with trailing boughs

And flowers, frosty white,

And lovely crystal butterflies;

But when the morning sun

Touched them with its golden beams,

They vanished one by one.
~Helen Bayley Davis, Jack Frost
"Every gardener knows that under the cloak of winter lies a miracle... a seed waiting to sprout, a bulb opening to the light, a bud straining to unfurl.  And the anticipation nurtures our dream." ~Barbara Winkler

Beautiful photos and quotes. If these weren't up to your standards for quotes - you set very high expectations.

PG - I totally agree!

Shadow - Obviously I found a few... but it was like searching for needles in a haystack.

Reaper - I'm glad you liked it!

Monkey Man - These are beautiful words... but most of the OTHER quotes I found on winter were about what is lacking during this season - it was rather depressing.

I absolutely love these pictures and the quotes. I really resonated with the first quote. This winter I took my first outdoor job, and it's shoveling snow in two quiet, serene neighborhoods a couple miles from my house. Whenever a few inches of snow fall, I have to get up at 2:00 a.m. and head outside to begin shoveling. What I'm greeted with is absolute silence and pristine beauty like nothing I could imagine. Simply perfect!

Megan - This is how I love winter best too... when it's quiet and still but for a few lovely flakes falling down from the sky. Much as I hate being cold, I actually enjoy shoveling snow under these circumstances too - which is a good think since we get so much of it!

Laura - I've always been fascinated by window frost. As a child, I really looked forward to discovering these magical creations on cold mornings. This one is particularly beautiful with the sun coming up in the background.

Felicitas, these are great pictures and quotes. I liked best the picture of the curvy bridge and Ruth Stout's words about being able to have longer stretches of quiet in winter.

Regards.
