Sunday 160: Recipe for Botulism

One jar of Nona’s canned tomatoes.
Season any way you like.
Taste-test before it boils. Then notice the cleverly disguised hole in the lid. Voila… instant botulism!

“Perhaps…” explained the experienced nurse on the other end of the line last night.

“But all the internet sites say that’s what happens when you eat something from an improperly sealed jar. Do I just wait for the double vision, drooping eyelids, slurred speech and paralysis to hit before I seek medical intervention or should I rush to the hospital now? I’ve read that early treatment is key!”

“Well, in 35 years of nursing, I have never encountered a case of botulism. But you may have food poisoning. How do you feel?”

“I am VERY anxious. Botulism can be fatal you know!”

“Well, if you haven’t got any symptoms, I’d say you don’t need to go to the hospital. Please call back if you have any more questions.”

So we wait… 18 hours and counting. Apparently, the symptoms of botulism generally appear between 18 and 36 hours after eating contaminated food. But they can also occur as late as 10 days afterward. Stay tuned!

OMG! This was a great 160 but I'm worried about you!
Please keep us posted.
An aside about the quote re moments that take your breath away. This was written on a wall on a bathroom I visited not too long ago and I wrote it down. Awesome. I also loved your comment on my blog today about becoming the person you want to be, and that some others might not like you that way... My dad used to say, Don't let the turkeys get you down.
Be well!
Chris

Yikes! How can they be so casual? I hope Nona's love overcomes any contaminants in the tomatoes. Great 160. Scary back story.

I have to say, Felicitas, I do love to jar my own stuff, sometimes. But, I'm very careful because I know the dangers of botulism. That having been said, your 160 is awesome, but I'm hoping it isn't true! If it is, I hope you will be well, and we'll keep our fingers crossed for you!

This sounds so much like something that would happen to me that it made me laugh!

Hope you survive!

Yes, it's true. I really am that careless sometimes... and perhaps a tad dramatic, too. But I'm certain I have learned this lesson and will be much more cautious in the future.

Thank you all for your concern. I'm pretty sure I will survive this. It's hour 23 and still no symptoms - LOL!

I say smear that stuff all over your face, especially between your eyes and your crow's feet. I think Nona made you some homemade Botox.

OH oh
Good luck with that... surely you'll be ok!

you need some tender loving care?

Make sure that you let us know that you are okay! Tomato products are hard to check sometimes because tomatoes have a certain acidic bitterness to them anyway.

It's been 37 hours... and I'm still standing!

Wow, that's a very good 160.
You know, before reading the comments i thought it was totally something else. It was like you'd used the lack of the fast medical intervention to symbolize how we do not heal our pains right away, but wait for them till they totally take over us, then try to figure out what to be done. I loved the recipe! It's real cool.
Hope you are alright now :)

Oh no!
I'm a real stickler for food safety, after being in the hospital twice with food poisoning. My husband thinks it's a big joke, so I'm never *quite* sure about what's in the fridge or on the table...always convinced that trichonosis or something is just around the corner. I sympathise!! (and hope the rest of those days pass VERY uneventfully!)
