Cultivating Genius

I am so proud of my 13 year old son - The Artist. He is working so hard right now to put together a portfolio of creative pieces for an audition in 10 days time to a high school with a specialized visual arts program. Whether he actually gets in or not, the process behind the attempt has been such a valuable experience, that it almost doesn’t matter.

The Artist is not particularly interested in sports (although he does have a wicked golf swing). And academics have never been his thing. But his wild imagination and eagerness to express it through pencil and paper is truly phenomenal. And as a mom, it makes me so happy to know that my child is passionate about something worthwhile.

We should all be so lucky to have an activity through which we can shine – regardless of how others may perceive it or whether or not it might actually take us anywhere concrete in this mundane life. True passion is about joy and it is rooted in the soul. And when we follow that kind of calling, it can only be something positive.

Back to Basics

After all the excesses that seem to define the holidays, I love the simplicity that follows in January. Difficult as it was for me to go back to work this week, I do feel somewhat refreshed from having had a few days to myself. And I am verging on excited with thoughts of all the new projects I know are headed my way – both in the office and at home.

I’m most enthusiastic however about returning to a healthy eating plan and lifestyle. Call it a resolution, if you will, but I just don’t think I can stomach any more bouts of the extreme eating that punctuated the majority of my holiday events - so at this point, it really doesn’t feel like much of a sacrifice!

My prescription: Matcha green tea soy lattes at breakfast instead of coffee; protein at every meal (no mean feat for a vegetarian!); no nasty white stuff – flour, sugar, starchy veggies; lots of greens, berries and filtered water. Five days in: so far, so good.

Recipe for Matcha Latte
¼ tsp matcha green tea powder + 2 tsp organic honey + 1 cup organic soy milk

Combine matcha and honey in a mug until it becomes a dark green paste. Heat soy milk – stove top or microwave. Pour ¼ cup heated milk into mug and stir until smooth. Pour in remaining milk, stir and enjoy!

Hello, again...

It’s been awhile since I’ve visited any of my blogging friends or posted anything, I know. And I’m sorry for that. It’s been a tumultuous time, for a few reasons... but I think I may have finally landed on my feet. Fingers crossed!

Despite the holiday rush, this year the season seems particularly magical to me. Maybe it’s because I’ve finished my shopping early and am now more focused on preparing for celebrations with family and friends. Or it could be because it’s been a relatively long and warm fall - so this morning when I woke to find a light snow falling it made me smile, rather than cringe; afterall, what’s Christmas without snow (at least in the Northern hemisphere)?!

This weekend, my 14 year old asked me why he’s only allowed two pairs of running shoes - one for school, as required for his uniform, and the other for everything else – when so many other people he knows have a different pair for every outfit. My response? It's unnecessary and wasteful. And although I'm pretty sure he's still at least halfway convinced I’m just really cheap, on another level, I know he gets it... and either way, that is that.

Just because we can have something, doesn't mean we should. Yet living when and where we do, exposed to such an unlimited wealth of material possibilities, it's often very difficult to know where to draw the line. So when is enough, enough? And why do so many of us feel compelled to surround ourselves with so much "stuff"?

In some cases, I think it stems from an ingrained need to "keep up with the Joneses" - in fear of being judged less worthy. In other instances, it’s simply the excitement of acquiring the latest greatest thing driving us. And if we can afford it in that moment we think, “Why not?” But the reality of all this stuff we collect is that it's bogging us down; it's cluttering our minds, our homes and eventually, our landfills.

While I am certainly no paragon of anti-clutter virtue, I love the idea of home as a sanctuary containing only those things truly necessary to happiness and wellbeing. To this end, I am trying hard not to make so many impulse purchases and to be more aware of what my family and I need, versus what we may want, for a whole assortment of unimportant reasons. And if it turns out that this new way of living makes it easier to put the kids through college, then that’s all the better!

Perspective

A few weeks ago, someone emailed me a portion of a speech attributed to Brian Dyson, CEO of Coca Cola. It serves as a reminder to us all of where our priorities really need to be:

“Imagine life as a game in which you are juggling some five balls in the air. You name them – work, family, health, friends and spirit … and you’re keeping all of these in the air.

You will soon understand that work is a rubber ball. If you drop it, it will bounce back. But the other four balls – family, health, friends and spirit – are made of glass. If you drop one of these, they will be irrevocably scuffed, marked, nicked, damaged or even shattered. They will never be the same. You must understand that and strive for Balance in your life.”

While it’s certainly not revolutionary news or anything we don’t all truly know in our hearts, for me at this time it struck a chord. This is because for the past few years, I have been so focused on my career and creative endeavours, that I have given them way too much importance. The kids, of course, have always come first, but I would have to say that everything else has placed after work on my priority list – to my detriment. But that is changing.

You may have noticed that I’ve been a little scarce over the past few weeks… and that trend is going to continue for the next little while. Right now, my main focus has to be my family, my health and our general wellbeing. Everything else is really going to have to take a back seat.

But blogging is too much fun for me to just give up; I would miss you all far too much! So I will be around… just not quite so regularly as before.

Out of Balance

Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about the importance of living one’s life in balance. This is, of course, because I am absolutely NOT living my life in this way at the moment. And while I certainly never intended for things to get so lopsided, nevertheless, they are.

Consistently working over-time at a job that gives me much too little in return, in combination with all the responsibilities that go along with maintaining a busy family household, have left me running pretty close to empty most of the time. It’s to the point now that even things that have always brought me pleasure – like blogging and keeping in-touch with good friends - just seem like more chores I’ve committed myself to doing.

I find myself fantasizing about winning the lottery – imagining how different my life would be if only… But of course, pinning one’s future happiness on this isn’t exactly practical. And when I break my dreams down to the specifics of what I need, ultimately what emerges is the desire for a peaceful home, meaningful work, time to do what I enjoy most, and the ability to positively affect the world around me. So is having more money really key to making this happen? Or is it just an excuse for not making some tough decisions now?

I’m thinking what I actually need is a realistic plan, which begins with taking a hard look at what in my life isn’t working. Then, for those areas identified as needing redirection, I need to map out how to get from where I am now to where I really want to be. And finally – the real key – I need to follow through and make it happen.

I’m off from work today… but being the typical multi-tasking mom that I am it’s not much of a holiday. My older son, Noah, is starting high school in the fall and needs a uniform. So in an effort to avoid the line-ups in August or on any given weekend, we went today – and yes, it was a good idea and he really does look sharp in his new blazer, dress shirt and khakis. On top of that, we dropped the dog off at the groomer and were planning to hit Chapters for some summer reading material and maybe, I thought, I’d even get the chance to sit down to a nice lunch with my two sweet boys before swinging back to pick up the pampered pooch on our way home… but this was not to be ~~as the cost of my sanity just seemed like too steep a price to pay~~.

Instead, as I’m sure anyone with kids has also experienced at least a thousand times, this is how it actually went down: A wee bit of boredom at the uniform shop led to finding amusement in torturing one another which after what seemed like a ridiculous amount of time dangerously threatened to ignite parental fireworks.

So, after rushing out of the shop with our purchases, and then urgently breaking all speed limits in an attempt to get the ~~monsters~~ kids home before completely losing my cool, I saw hovering above us a white dove with outstretched wings and tail feathers. This was very odd: First, because of how it was flying and second, because we don’t often see white doves in our neck of the woods. So this has to mean something, right?

According to spiritual psychotherapist and shamanic practitioner Steven D. Farmer who has written extensively on the subject of connecting with animal spirit guides, when we encounter animals in unusual ways it may be a sign to pay attention to what that animal represents. In this case, doves signify bringing peace, harmony and love into the world. As I was far more focused on the opposite feelings at that exact moment, I’m taking this to have been both a warning of not allowing my anger to get the better of me, and also a pat on the back for generally being a good peacekeeper.

While I know I can’t absolutely control my teens’ behaviour ~~except through threats of extreme punishment such as taking away the Xbox~~, I do recognize that by consistently modeling a harmonious and loving demeanor, I can have a powerful and positive impact on them... even if they don’t immediately follow suit. So little dove, thank you for your timely message, and I will continue to do my best.

To date, BP has received more than 20,000 suggestions from people around the world on how to stop the leak or clean up the oil. And I just read today, that actor Kevin Costner’s company, Ocean Therapy Solutions, has developed a technology to separate water from crude oil, which BP has contracted to use over the next 60 days.

Countless volunteers are working to assist wildlife relief efforts with agencies like the Audubon Society, Alabama Coastal Foundation, Mobile Bay National Estuary Program, Mobile Bay Keeper, Save Our Seabirds, National Wildlife Federation, The Greater New Orleans Foundation, Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana, The United Way, The Nature Conservancy, Gulf Coast Fund, Save Our Gulf and First Response Team of America.

On Monday night, Larry King is hosting a 2-hour special “Disaster in the Gulf: How You Can Help”. It’s essentially a telethon to raise money for three of the charities doing work in the Gulf and will feature celebrities including Chelsea Handler, Sting, Tim McGraw, Kathy Griffin, Alyssa Milano, Deepak Chopra, Pete Wentz, Ted Danson, Robert Redford, Harry Connick Jr., Jenny McCarthy, Melania Trump, Ivanka Trump, Aaron Neville, Kerry Kennedy, James Carville and Mary Matalin, Anderson Cooper, Tyson Ritter, Lenny Kravitz, Ian Somerhalder, Edward James Olmos, Philippe Cousteau and more!

As world citizens, we are coming together in this crisis. But ultimately, the best way to help the Earth is as individuals, recognizing the need to take more responsibility for the daily choices we make which really do impact our planet as a whole.

Along My Morning Route

While the weather is nice, I try to get outside and walk most mornings with my dog, Kobi. Our favourite way to go is along the ravine that backs onto our city subdivision.

Some of the plantings along the path are wild, like these roses may be.

There are a few lovely little bridges like this one which leads from the street onto a footpath. Beneath it runs a small stream where I've seen a family of mallard ducks a few times.

This little robin was singing his heart out that morning.

Canada Geese are everywhere in springtime. Several families regularly swim together in this man-made lake.

Daisies are another wild flower that have sprouted up along the path.

Near the end of our journey: a nice place to rest and take in the view.

Prayer for the Gulf

Dr. Masaru Emoto is a scientist from Japan who has researched and published the characteristics of water. Among other things, his research has revealed that water physically responds to emotions.

Many of us are predominantly angry when we consider what is happening in the Gulf. And while justified in this emotion, we may be of greater assistance to our planet and its life forms if we sincerely, powerfully and humbly pray for the most positive outcome.

Below is a prayer that Dr. Emoto himself has proposed and which many of us have already begun to use. It is our belief that if we set an intention of love and healing that is so large, so overwhelming, we truly can perform a miracle in the Gulf of Mexico.

We are not powerless.
We are powerful.

Our united energy, speaking this prayer daily - multiple times daily - can literally shift the balance of destruction that is happening. We don't have to know how; we just have to recognize that the power of love is greater than any other power active in the Universe today.

Please join us in this quest.

Who Do You Think You Are?

I think that I know myself. After 44 years on the planet, I would hope that I could at least say that. But can I really?

Every moment of every day we are growing and changing ever so slightly. Yet at the same time, these changes amass quickly enough that most of us can easily recognize that how we thought a few years or even months back, isn’t the same as how we think now.

It’s fascinating, really, this process of personal evolution. Do you ever observe yourself in those moments when your thoughts shift over the course of a conversation or after witnessing something uplifting or disturbing? I love these instances of clarity when I just get something in a way that I never have before. But it also makes me realize that I can’t fully know how I will think and consequently, who I will be in the future. The twists and turns life has in store could put each of us on completely different tracks.

I hope that I will always be open and curious about life. I can’t imagine ever being so jaded by circumstances that I can’t treat everyone with kindness, respect and love. And I think that I am strong enough to hold on to my spirit despite the challenges I know we all must face from time to time. But I can’t be certain. So do I really know who I am? I think perhaps I do, if only in this moment. How about you?

Gentle Strength

There is power in kindness. It takes strength to remain calm within any storm. And being quiet while others grandstand and shout over one another to be heard is not a determination of meekness or ineptitude. But in business, when you are surrounded by type ‘A’ personalities who have been groomed to perform aggressively, silence is the quickest way to obscurity.

I am not overly quiet, but I don’t like to speak unless I actually have something worthwhile to say. I most certainly prefer meaningful conversations to small talk and platitudes. And I have been fighting this prejudice my whole life.

As a child, my type ‘A’ father pushed me to be different and for years, I tried. But eventually, I had to concede that I was working against my type and that it really is okay for me to be more comfortable shining behind the scenes rather than on-stage. Not everyone is meant to be “The Star” outside of their own lives. I dare say most of us even prefer our supporting roles on the world stage. But that doesn’t mean that we don’t want or expect to be appreciated for our talents.

This week, my bosses discovered what happens when you fire (or reassign) all the copywriters: the ads don’t write themselves. Quel surprise! We may have looked like we didn’t add much value to the company when we were all quietly working away at producing simple but brilliant copy, yet the reality of it is just now effectively hitting their bottom line. Fortunately for them, I’m still here to help them out in a pinch.

All any of us truly wants is to be treated fairly and with kindness. With a smile, you have the power to transform someone’s day. And requests delivered with humble appreciation will more than likely produce better-than-expected results. We may be quiet. Most times, we may exist in the background. But at the end of the day, we all have vital roles to play and ultimately discounting anyone who operates differently does a disservice to everyone. Namaste.

Age of Grace

Recently I’ve found myself thinking more about the subject of aging. Although it’s never been something I’ve been especially worried about, I find that my perspective on it seems to be changing along with my own advancement.

When we are children, our birthdays are eagerly anticipated and vigorously celebrated. We count our ages in ½ and even ¼ year increments. We imagine all of the ways our lives will be better with each passing year… and in many ways they are.

In our later teenage years and on into our twenties, we are so caught up in the adventures of our youth that considerations of planning for our future health, retirement savings and the like seem utterly ridiculous. Anyone over a certain age is most certainly obsolete in their thinking and way of life, and only members of this particular generation can possibly ever “get it”.

When I was that age (too many moons ago), I remember my parents and their friends often using the expression “Youth is wasted on the young.” It always angered me to hear that then, because I thought of it as a nasty commentary on our collective naiveté, which would ultimately prevent us from fully appreciating our lives in that present moment. I whole-heartedly disagreed because beyond any doubt, I knew I was having the time of my life.

But, this is also the stage when some heavy soul searching begins to take place. I’m not sure it’s something that ever really ends (for some of us, at least), but “finding” ourselves is certainly a key component to growing up. And during this time, how many of us did not make life-altering decisions we’d give plenty to reverse at this point? “If I only knew then, what I know now” is another expression that comes to mind – and may more accurately reflect what the “old folks” actually meant by that earlier statement.

Either way, the past is what it is and focusing on what can’t be changed is not healthy. And then I look in the mirror and for the first time, I realize that my face is truly changing. I know that I can no longer pass for 20-something and probably not even early 30-something – unless someone were to be very generous. Yes, it’s all down hill from here. So, what now?

I’m certain the key to really living is in finding authentic enjoyment at every stage of life. Being you and embracing or changing each situation to suit yourself as necessary. I don’t want to look back on my life with regret. I think that’s wrong. We all make decisions based on what we know and where we are at a specific time in our lives.

So as I age, I hope I have the wisdom to forgive myself for my mistakes and courage to move past anything that proves very difficult, in order to have a chance at living my life with the same exuberance I once did when I was 5 ½ and 11 ¼ and 16. And I wish the same thing for all of you.

Nature Alert!

It’s that time of year again when baby animals of all kinds are stopping traffic. This morning, driving into work, marked the second time in two weeks that I’ve witnessed cars halted in both directions while a new family of geese toddled across the road.

While being so close to nature in the city has always made me smile – even when I’m in a hurry – I also realize how truly vulnerable these animals are. So when you are out and about over the next couple of months, in order to avoid tragedy, please remember to be extra cautious.

This poem was inspired by Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish’s new book: I Shall Not Hate. He is known as ”the Gaza doctor” who tragically lost three of his daughters and a niece on January 16, 2009 when his home was bombed by Israelis.

Rather than seek revenge, he is looking to resolve the Palestinian situation in the Gaza Strip through peaceful means. He is a true hero, from whom we all have something to learn.

Marathon of Hope

Thirty years ago this week, Terry Fox began his Marathon of Hope. It started in St. John’s Newfoundland on April 12, 1980 with minimal attention, but enthusiasm for his quest quickly grew along with the miles he ran to raise awareness and funds for cancer research.

Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba and raised in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, Terry was 18 years old when he was diagnosed with bone cancer. While recovering in hospital from the amputation of his right leg, it was the suffering of the other patients – many of them children – that made him so determined to do something about it.

Terry ran an average of 42 km (26 miles) a day for 143 days, until the cancer that had spread to his lungs forced him to quit on September 1^st, 1980. While he was disappointed in not being able to continue, he had succeeded in running 5,373 km (3,339 miles) across six provinces and winning a permanent place in the hearts of Canadians. Less than a year later, on June 28^th 1981, Terry died at the age of 22.

When he began the Marathon of Hope, his goal was $1 for every Canadian – so at that time, $22 million. But since then, almost $500 million has been raised worldwide for cancer research in his name. There is no doubt that Terry Fox, the boy who believed in miracles, has become the hero who continues to inspire everyone who knows his story.

As Hamlet Said...

And this is exactly the line I think of every time I can’t imagine that something could possibly be true. This world is an incredible, magickal place. In the 43 years I have been on this Earth, I have experienced some of the most extraordinary things. And by “extraordinary”, I mean those things not commonly referred to as ordinary but which are in fact, perfectly natural. This world is far less mundane than many people are comfortable realizing… but that doesn’t make it any less true. And that being so (or at least in my opinion), what then is the point?

It’s one thing to recognize that there is more to life than meets the eye, but it’s quite another to understand how it all relates to us and why it matters. I have spent my life asking such questions, and investigating various philosophies and religions. And I have decided that now is the time I’d like to start sharing my ideas with anyone who may be interested.

Originally, I thought I should start another blog dedicated specifically to the topic of spirituality, as it is such a large part of my life. But then, again, precisely because it is so much a part of who I am, I have decided instead to just tackle it right here.

For those who don’t agree with my views, as always, that’s perfectly fine. What a dull world it would be if we were all in agreement all of the time. I just don’t want to shield this part of myself any more… as they say: life is too short – on this plane, anyway!

Family Drama

Nothing brings out crazy quite like family get-togethers over the holidays. Why is that? What compels us as grown people who have no difficulty holding it together amongst strangers, to routinely regress and act out around the relatives? It can’t just be my family… can it?

I don’t know whether it’s because we’ve become overly-comfortable with one another or that we’ve been thrown together having so little in common aside from our last names; in actuality, it’s probably a bit of both. But after the impromptu fireworks have erupted, what then?

I know when I let loose - which thankfully happens far less than it once did – I feel terrible and have difficulty getting past it until I’ve apologized or discussed the situation ad nauseum with someone sane. But there are more regular fire starters who clearly feel less remorse over their actions and even seem to relish a good fight over nothing at all.

Regardless of why things are the way they are, if nothing else these circumstances are true opportunities to practice the art of patience.

This week a woman I work with experienced a second near-fatal allergy attack. While we don’t know exactly what triggered it, we suspect it had something to do with the large amounts of food, which are constantly circulating within our office area.

I can’t imagine how difficult it must be to live with a condition like this. Or be the parent of a child with such an allergy. I do know, however, the next time I begin to feel inconvenienced by any nut free rule, I will remember my friend and instead feel fortunate that this is the only thing I have to worry about.

He's Leaving

Sunday 160: Recipe for Botulism

One jar of Nona’s canned tomatoes.
Season any way you like.
Taste-test before it boils. Then notice the cleverly disguised hole in the lid. Voila… instant botulism!

“Perhaps…” explained the experienced nurse on the other end of the line last night.

“But all the internet sites say that’s what happens when you eat something from an improperly sealed jar. Do I just wait for the double vision, drooping eyelids, slurred speech and paralysis to hit before I seek medical intervention or should I rush to the hospital now? I’ve read that early treatment is key!”

“Well, in 35 years of nursing, I have never encountered a case of botulism. But you may have food poisoning. How do you feel?”

“I am VERY anxious. Botulism can be fatal you know!”

“Well, if you haven’t got any symptoms, I’d say you don’t need to go to the hospital. Please call back if you have any more questions.”

So we wait… 18 hours and counting. Apparently, the symptoms of botulism generally appear between 18 and 36 hours after eating contaminated food. But they can also occur as late as 10 days afterward. Stay tuned!

Measuring Life

I stumbled across this quote yesterday while browsing through Chapters. For some reason, it really struck a chord with me – probably because my life has been so stressful of late.

To me, it’s a reminder to slow down and take the time to really appreciate what’s going on around us. It’s not enough just to “get through” life. In order for it all to really mean something, we have to take the time to be introspective and learn the lessons life continuously presents us with. We need to be there for our family and friends and regularly show them that they matter to us. And we need to find enjoyment in most of what we do – after all, if we’re not having fun, why are we doing it?

I want more moments that take my breath away.

Our Personal Olympics

We all have dreams… but what does it take to REALLY pursue them? And what are any of us willing to give up in order to live our lives in a truly extraordinary manner? Comfort, perhaps? Or going against the vision others may have of us? And what’s the ultimate consequence for NOT going for it?

I don’t really want to find out how I will feel at the end of my life if I haven’t pursued my dreams to the nth degree. That doesn’t mean my dreams can’t change along the way… and they are certainly not subject to anyone else’s approval or measuring stick. But to be in pursuit of something (or many things) that makes me feel so fulfilled - complete, even - that is my personal goal.

As extraordinary Canadian athlete Clara Hughes has said: “If you dream and you allow yourself to dream, you can do anything. And that’s what this Olympic medal represents.”

Time Out

So, it’s Monday… and I’m home. Not because I called in sick, but because on Friday, my boss staged a wellness intervention. Despite all my assurances that “I’m fine” - though admittedly still struggling a little to get over the pneumonia that’s plagued me since early January - she took the time to poll those who work closest with me and determined that I am not. And so, I have been banished from the office for 2 days of rest and relaxation.

In all my many years of working, I have never encountered this level of caring and compassion from an employer. From my experience, the only thing the company higher-ups are generally focused on is the bottom line. And it’s not like I’ve been slacking off (‘cause I ain’t no slouch!) or polluting the office with my germs – as I mentioned to her, I did stay home for the two and a half days the doctor said I was contagious. But no, that’s not it. She and everyone else are simply very concerned for my health. Who knew?!

Of course, being the multi-tasker that I am, I can’t help but think of all kinds of things to do during this unexpected break. But, in keeping with the spirit in which it was so generously intended, I am instead forcing myself to be still and appreciate my time out. Thank you, Johanne!

Here Comes The Sun

Yesterday was Imbolc, which means we’ve officially made it through the mid-point of our winter. It won’t be long now before all the cold white stuff is gone, replaced by all the buds of spring. Can’t wait!

Thank you, Roxy, for passing along this lovely award. In keeping with the spirit of it, I am happy to follow the “rules”: Link it back to the presenter (Roxy at Woman of Essence), pass it on to 3 other bloggers, and compose a list of 10 happy things. So here goes…

I find happiness in the following:

1. My children’s happiness.

2. Time to express my creativity.

3. Communicating with so many interesting people of diverse interests and points of view on the Blogosphere.

4. A GOOD cup of coffee, especially in the morning.

5. Spending time in my favourite metaphysical bookstore.

6. Reading – historical fiction, poetry, esoteric non-fiction.

7. Beautiful, shiny things – particularly crystals and exotic-looking jewellery (I’m a bit of a magpie).

8. Casual get-togethers with friends.

9. Watching feel-good movies – romantic comedies, dramatic period pieces with happy endings.

10. Creating and enjoying delicious vegetarian meals.

Sometimes you just need a break…

And sometimes you have a break thrust upon you. And then again, sometimes what you think may have been a break isn’t actually one at all… like when it’s disguised as pneumonia. Two weeks of horrid coughing and ingesting the most vile horse pills is enough to make me really regret getting so rundown.

It’s also NOT a break when you neglect the blog that you love so much because all your energy and creativity has been sapped “assisting” your children with two speeches, a rap song and a fitness routine, all the while attempting not to pass out from exhaustion. (Feel sorry for me now.)

But really, how many moms with kids of a certain age ever do get a substantial time-out? And if you think those stolen hours here and there between running errands, working fulltime and doing housework count… they DON’T! Because you know, it’s not like the work or worrying is being done by anyone else – it’s all still there awaiting your return to reality. So truly, those kind of breaks are just postponement of the inevitable, ensuring you will have to work twice as hard to get everything done or go to bed an hour or two later than you really want to.

So, if you are a mom who desperately needs a break – take one, without guilt, because you’ve earned it! And if you’re not a mom but have one in your life – give her break. And while we’re at it, I think we should declare February “Mother’s Month” because one day is not enough and May is too far off anyway.

Spellbound

Looking Forward

As we get ready to close the door on 2009 and the first decade of the new millennium, I must say that I am not sorry to see them go. These have been difficult times for so many: Environmental disasters, financial crisis and war have scarred us all on some level. But, perhaps these events were necessary… shaping us in ways to make us stronger and better prepared to face an uncertain future.

Science has proven in so many ways that it no longer serves us to disrespect the Earth. I am hopeful that in this next decade, more of us will get serious about this and take the initiative to do what’s necessary to turn things around.

Being more aware of our priorities and watching how we spend/save our money are also important lessons many of us will take into 2010. Living beyond our means can have uncomfortable consequences. But sometimes it takes a crisis to realize what’s truly important… and that’s priceless!

As for the wars that have marked this past decade, I think most of us realize there can be no winners in this sort of thing, especially when so many beautiful souls have been lost for such negligible causes. We have this one planet only and so are all connected regardless of continent, country, ethnicity or any other artificial boundary that doesn’t matter. We need to find a way to coexist.

With global communications increasing, we are growing closer and closer to one another with every year. The blogasphere is just one aspect of this. I can hardly believe that I am connecting on a regular basis with people from South Africa, India, Malaysia, Israel, Poland, Italy, England, America and Iran, to name a few. It’s unbelievably wonderful!

We have the opportunity to do things in our world – and with our world - that the generations before us couldn’t even imagine. But before new ways of doing things can be embraced, the old ways need to be dismantled. That’s what I believe the past 10 years have been about (more or less). And I can’t wait to see what we do with the next 10!
